Park Ranger Problem Solving: An ‘Addition & Subtraction’ Rich Task for Years 3–4

In Classroom Resources, Number and Algebra (3–6)

Congratulations! Your students have just been appointed as the new Park Rangers for a small state National Park! Their job is to ensure the wellbeing of the park and all its flora and fauna. It’s a big job… and it’s going to involve plenty of maths!

The aim of this task is to provide a rich, contextual activity through which students can begin to explore the addition and subtraction of one- and two-digit of numbers in everyday contexts.

This downloadable lesson resource is for teachers of students from Years 3 and 4. It is mapped against Australian Curriculum (Mathematics) and Australian Curriculum (Science) outcomes, as well as the NSW Mathematics and Science syllabi.
