Developing a sense of scale is crucial for children as they learn to better understand the world (amount, time, size) and become better able to express ideas as they speak.

But scale can be tricky for some, as they adjust to the idea of thinking about objects, time and money in new and different ways.

BetterExplained, a great website recently discovered by AMSI, includes some great tips and tricks for developing a sense of scale – compare objects side by side, break down huge amounts into smaller sub groups, rescale and resize, and use people, places and things as examples when trying to engage students.

This popular video is a fantastic example of using familiar objects to establish a sense of scale, with great visual cues to help students see just how big – or small – the earth is.
