Part of the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) Illustrations of practice series, the video “The No Language Method” demonstrates a strategy that encourages students to think deeply about a number. The teacher begins by demonstrating what she wants the students to do through the use of materials, visual representations and symbols without verbal explanation. Student then add their knowledge and strategies around the number, again without talking. This activity is used as a tune-in and provides an opportunity for the teacher to gather observational data about each student’s confidence with the learning.
