Each year AMSI produces a Discipline Profile of the Mathematical Sciences, identifying emerging trends throughout Australia in relation to schools, higher education, industry and research.
The Discipline Profile for 2014 reveals a number of trends witnessed within Australian primary and secondary schools, including the rate of advanced mathematics enrolments, NAPLAN numeracy results, international ranking for Australian school-level mathematical performance and the percentage of qualified mathematics teachers in classrooms.
AMSI Director Geoff Prince was also interviewed on ABC Radio National in the days following the online release of the Discipline Profile, speaking about the rate of advanced mathematics enrolments in high school and the need to support mathematics teachers who are currently teaching outside of their qualified field.
The AMSI Outreach program aims to support these teachers by offering specialist advice on classroom activities and school curriculum. The Outreach program also includes a number of school visits per semester, and a series of professional development sessions to help teachers update their existing mathematical skill set.
AMSI has also produced free online TIMES and SAM middle and senior year professional development modules for teachers who feel they need additional resources to support their own plans and curriculum.
