## Work Unit: The Geometry and Algebra of Honeycomb

### Have you ever taken a good hard look at a piece of honeycomb?

Bees create honeycomb to make honey out of nectar, to store honey, to store pollen, to lay eggs and to raise young bees (larvae) into adults. Honeycomb cells are truly ‘multi-purpose spaces’!

Developed through collaboration between the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute and the Gene Technology Access Centre, this integrated unit of work explores the amazing structures of honeycomb by examining the properties of regular and irregular polygons and polyhedra. Students then move on to solve problems using geometric and algebraic reasoning.

Suitable for challenging your students in Years 5 and 6 or for developing algebraic and geometric reasoning in Years 7 and 8.
